Can you build an ADU on your property?

In California the answer is almost always yes: state law guarantees at least one ADU plus one JADU on any single-family lot, ministerially, in every jurisdiction (Gov. Code § 66323). The real questions are how large, how tall, and with how much parking. What this check does, and refuses to do

The result is resolved by the same engine behind our API: the state floor from Gov. Code §§ 66310 to 66342, your jurisdiction's HCD ordinance review outcome, and the lot figures you enter. The size result is always a range. Without parcel geometry no one can compute your exact buildable envelope, and a site that gives you one number is guessing. We do not issue zoning determinations; only your jurisdiction can.

How to read this. Values are resolved from California statute text and carry the governing section, a link to it, and the date that text was last amended. Compliance status is derived from HCD's published ordinance review letters. ADU Standards does not issue zoning determinations; only the jurisdiction can.
